Great Game Intros : Syndicate

Cart: Syndictae
Cab: Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC
Coin: Starbreeze Studios

A commercial failure for the supremely talented developers at Starbreeze Studios; Syndicate was a resounding success on a number of levels.

A faithful and yet original interpretation of a cult franchise; a finely-polished and well-executed product from top to bottom; a brilliantly realised distillation of commonly accepted visions of our dystopian future and a damned fine shooter to boot. Not since Halo CE had I felt the presence of such an original and confidently flavoured brand of console-based FPS action. Generic, yes, but assured too with just enough of its own style and swagger to stick with you for years to come.

As does its intro.

On first glance, it appears to be a token gesture, included because, well, it has to be. Dig a little deeper, however, and you’ll find much to admire. Simple and yet strikingly bold, it sets the tone perfectly with a classic ‘less is more’ approach. Disturbingly accurate in its gloomy predictions of the digital-divide we’re only just beginning to slice open and of the impact of wearable and implanted technology; its narrator’s dispassionate and jaded assessment of what will undoubtedly come to pass is frighteningly straightforward.

Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it genius.

  1. Never played this, could never get over the fact they made another fps when they could have done a true syndicate game.

  2. I hear what you’re saying, but look past that and you’ll find (if you’re into your FPSs) a solid and weighty experience.
