Cart: No Second Prize Cab: Atari ST / Amiga Coin: Thallon
The very first in our new series looking at some of the greatest introduction sequences in gaming. An intro to many, is an annoyance that must be suffered, just another barrier to gameplay, and something that can put them off playing a game.
In many cases we agree, but there have been some fantastic introduction sequences over the years, and some of them have nothing to do with the story whatsoever.
A case in point: this beauty from No Second Prize, a motorbike game for the Amiga and Atari ST.
Yes, to the untrained eye those super blocky polygon bikes do look a bit naff, as does the hilarious ‘motion blur’ effect, but the way the excellent music builds to a crescendo along with what is happening on-screen, is gorgeous.
The camera races after the bikes, and waits for them to shoot over the hill, and it builds to a climax when the game’s logo appears. It is all made using the 3D game engine, and is a prelude to what is a brilliant racing game, and a worthy first entry in our series.
